How to Pass your Driving Test

How to Pass Your Driving Theory Test

The Driving Theory Test is an essential step in getting your full driving licence. You’ll need to answer 50 multiple-choice questions within 57 minutes at a local test centre using a computer. To pass, you must answer at least 43 questions correctly.

The test evaluates your knowledge on key areas, including:

Driver behaviour and safe driving attitudes

Traffic signs and road rules

The effects of alcohol, drugs, and fatigue on driving

Vehicle safety and basic maintenance

Top Resources to Help You Pass

Prepare effectively using these official and trusted learning materials:

The Official Highway Code – Learn the essential rules of the road

Know Your Traffic Signs – Recognise all road signs and markings

The Official DSA Theory Test – Practice multiple-choice questions and hazard perception tests

By studying these resources and practising regularly, you can pass your driving theory test with confidence and take the next step toward becoming a safe, licensed drive

Passing the Hazard Perception Test

The Hazard Perception Test is taken alongside your Driving Theory Test. During the test, you’ll watch 14 short video clips and need to identify a total of 15 potential hazards on the road.

Quick Facts About the Hazard Perception Test:

Each hazard requires a response, such as changing speed or direction, which you indicate by clicking the left or right mouse button.

Each film clip is shown only once, so careful observation is essential.

You are scored on how many hazards you correctly identify, with each hazard graded from 1 to 5 points.

The sooner you spot a hazard, the higher your score.

Randomly clicking the mouse results in a zero score.

You must achieve a minimum score of 44 out of 75 to pass.

Important Note:

You must pass both the Driving Theory Test and the Hazard Perception Test before booking your practical driving test.

Passing the  Practical Driving Test

The Practical Driving Test is the final step to getting your full driving licence. It typically lasts around 45 minutes and includes several key elements:

Practical Test Components:

Eyesight check – Ensures you meet the minimum vision requirements for driving.

Vehicle safety questions (“Show Me, Tell Me”) – Tests your knowledge of vehicle safety and basic maintenance.

Driving in various conditions – You will drive at different speeds and on roads with varying conditions.

Reversing exercise – One of the following manoeuvres will be tested:

Reversing into a parking bay

Reversing out of a parking bay

Parallel parking

Pulling up on the right-hand side of the road and reversing

Independent driving – Approximately 20 minutes of driving while following directions or road signs without step-by-step instructions.

During the test, the examiner will assess your overall standard of safe driving. There are no tricks or surprises—the examiner simply observes your general driving skills and your ability to perform one of the four set manoeuvres. Our lessons ensure you practice all manoeuvres and gain the confidence and skills needed to pass.

Driving Faults – What You Need to Know

You can make up to 15 minor driving faults and still pass the test.

16 or more minor faults will result in a fail.

Committing one serious or dangerous fault will automatically result in a fail, regardless of the number of minor faults.

Passing your Practical Driving Test demonstrates that you have the skills and confidence to drive safely on today’s roads.
